Jammu and Kashmir: PM Modi promises elections in Kashmir

Indian PM Narendra Modi has said his government plans to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir soon.

He said "Our democracy’s biggest strength is the ability to sit across a table and exchange views."

"I told the leaders of J&K that it is the people, specially the youth who have to provide political leadership to J&K, and ensure their aspirations are duly fulfilled."

How does this stand up to the facts/reality on the ground?"

Thousands of political leaders, students, teachers, activists and other locals were arrested in 2019, including those he was talking to - many are still in jail.

There was also a severe communications and internet blockade, which was only lifted in 2020."

Any one who dares to speak out can be arrested under a controversial law that allows authorities to detain people for two years without trial.

That is the true reality of Indiam democracy.

How are the youth in jails (without trial) going to provide leadership

The only youth not in jail are those who do not criticise his governments action of brutal suppression.
